Naked Mountain Winery – A Founding Winery in Virginia – Part 1

The first vines were planted on the Naked Mountain Winery property in 1976 by Bob and Phoebe Harper after having discovered that where peaches will grow, grapes will grow, too. They aptly named the winery after the mountain the property sits on, Naked Mountain, and began to develop the property adding a winemaking facility and tasting room within the next few years. Bob and Phoebe were pioneers of Virginia wine, as some of the first commercial winemakers in a burgeoning industry making some of the best wines of Virgnia. Naked Mountain is not only one of the first wineries in Virginia, it was the first winery in Markham.  They continued to develop the winery and vineyard, garnering numerous awards including several Virginia Governor’s Cups, until 2010 when it passed from the Harpers to Randy and Meagan Morgan.

** Founded in 1974, Naked Mountain has often been touted not only as “the best winery near me” but also as “one of the best Virginia wineries”.  We are also a dog friendly winery, a kid friendly winery, a winery with food, an event winery, and a proud member of the VA winery / VA wine and the VA vineyard /  Virginia vineyards community.  We offer wine tastings, wine flights, wine by the glass as well as wine by the bottle.  We offer winery reservations, wine club events, and (as a winery for weddings) a place for a vineyard wedding.  Many people looking for us often search for a winery in Delaplane, or a winery in Marshall, even as far as a winery in Front Royal, and we proudly count ourselves as a member of all of those communities.  We hope you will come visit us and DRINK NAKED!**
